CUTIS / Field notes
Do biotin supplements actually help hair?
Essential nutrition is not the same as evidence for extra intake.
Biotin supports important metabolic enzymes, and deficiency can affect hair and skin. But deficiency is uncommon in people eating a varied diet. NIH ODS notes little scientific evidence that supplements improve hair, skin and nails in people without an identified need.
A nutrient’s normal role cannot establish that taking extra will improve healthy hair. Reports involving deficiency or particular disorders do not demonstrate a general benefit for every person with shedding.
High-dose biotin can interfere with some blood tests. Tell your clinician and laboratory about supplement use before testing and follow their specific advice. Persistent hair changes should be investigated rather than treated as an automatic vitamin shortage.
