Why does acne happen?
A closer look at the follicle—not a story about dirty skin.
Acne starts in the hair follicle and its oil gland. Changes in cell shedding can plug the follicle, while sebum, inflammation and the activity of Cutibacterium acnes interact. These processes help explain why both non-inflamed comedones and inflamed lesions can appear on the same skin.
Scrubbing does not reach the source of that biology. Harsh cleansing and picking can instead damage the barrier, aggravate inflammation and increase the risk of scars or dark marks.
Gentle skin care supports comfort, but treatment depends on the type and severity of acne. Painful nodules, scarring or persistent breakouts are reasons to seek dermatological assessment.
