Why dark spots linger after acne

The inflammation may settle before the pigment does.

An acne lesion can leave a flat dark mark after active inflammation resolves. This is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which differs from a raised or indented scar. It is often more persistent in darker skin tones.

Repeated picking, irritating products and sunlight can prolong discoloration. The first step is to control the underlying inflammation and avoid creating new injury; stronger exfoliation is not automatically better.

Consistent sun protection and a gentle routine help create a foundation. Persistent or uncertain pigmentation may need a tailored plan, and a changing or unusual lesion should be assessed rather than assumed to be an acne mark.
